UK Salads Limited, a key supplier to Aldi, has recently gone into administration. The major Essex-based supplier, well known across supermarkets for its variety of fresh produce, is facing unsecured creditors exceeding £10 million.

Reports indicate that UK Salads Limited possesses nearly £15 million worth of high-quality greenhouse crops, including tomatoes, cucumbers, and aubergines, spread across its expansive 60-acre greenhouse facility awaiting harvest.

Established as a family business in 1992, UK Salads underwent acquisition by private investors in 2019 under the name Aquila Food Group Holding Company. Despite intentions to expand organically and through acquisitions, the company faced numerous challenges over the past five years, including escalating energy costs.

Partners at FRP assumed the roles of joint administrators last week. The brand was most recognised for its wide market presence, excellent growing, packing, and importing  serving major retailers. The news comes as a shock to wholesalers, caterers and the public alike. The current inflation rate in the UK along with challenging trading conditions have led to this insolvency.

Over the last few months, the company found itself unable to meet its financial obligations, leading to its entry into administration and closure of operations. This development has resulted in approximately 200 job redundancies, with the joint administrators pledging support to affected individuals in their claims to the Redundancy Payments Service.

Spokespeople at Aldi have commented on the news and, and extended their support to those impacted. With the possibility of the UK Salads crop going unharvested, Aldi faces the dilemma of either seeking alternative suppliers domestically or resorting to international markets like the Netherlands due to insufficient local volume.

UK Salads joins a growing list of fresh produce companies succumbing to operational challenges, with major players like Bardsley and Leadketty Farm also facing closures or wind-downs due to market pressures and rising costs.
