Budget retailer Wilko is facing imminent collapse with more than 12,000 jobs at risk. Rising costs, inflation and subdued consumers have all led to this situation. The high street retailer has a critical 10-day period to secure finances and avert disaster. The business has been operating in the UK since 1930 and has more than 400 stores nationwide.

Amidst this crisis, there are currently no plans for immediate store closures. Wilko continues to operate as usual during this period. The household and garden products retailer, with approximately 400 stores, has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators at the high court, with advisory firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in the picture.

Currently, Wilko’s ‘All sale’ tab features over 1,000 products, conveniently listed by category to simplify shopping. The Garden and Outdoors Offers section offers the most significant savings.

Wilko has been experiencing a steady decline in recent years. Sales have decreased in each of the last four financial years. It suffered a significant loss of £35.9 million last year, following a drop in sales by a fifth to £1.2 billion between 2019 and last year. One of the key issues affecting Wilko’s operations, is the presence of too many large stores in expensive high street locations. Additionally, supply chain disruptions due to COVID-19 and logistics challenges caused by Brexit have added to the company’s woes.

The company has been making active efforts to reduce costs by cutting hundreds of jobs and shutting down 15 stores last year. Head office operations have also been restructured. Despite facing losses, Wilko still paid dividends to its owners in the previous year.

The current leadership, including Chair Chris Howell and Chief Executive Mark Jackson, are actively seeking an investor who can help steer the company towards a viable future. However, the prevailing economic conditions, with consumers tightening their spending amidst rising living costs and energy prices, present significant challenges.

While Wilko has received significant interest from investors and offers, none of them have provided the necessary cash within the required timeframe. Any potential investor would need a substantial amount of capital to turn around this well-loved retailer’s business. Stay tuned here for more updates about this story.
