Rising costs, operational setbacks, and financial struggles have forced yet another independent British bakery into a crisis. Liverpool-based Baltic Bakehouse officially ceased trading earlier this year, and has formally entered liquidation now. This marked another blow to the UK’s struggling food and hospitality sector.

Established in 2012, the bakery employed 24 staff across three sites: Allerton Road, Bridgewater Street in the Baltic Triangle, and a wholesale bakery in Wavertree. The business supplied baked goods to local hospitality businesses including the Halyard Hotel’s Voyagers restaurant and the Novotel Liverpool Paddington Village. Despite a loyal client base and a decade old reputation, it was difficult for the business to sustain.

Financial Decline Since 2023

The bakery’s financial struggles began in 2023 after relocating to a new site, which triggered a sharp rise in overheads. The impact of soaring energy bills, rising rents, and higher insurance premiums further weakened cash flow.  By late 2024, a dispute with Liverpool City Council over the Bridgewater Street café reduced capacity, compounding financial strain.

In March 2025, the business suffered another major setback when its Wavertree bakery failed a hygiene inspection and was closed indefinitely.  With no viable path forward, the company ceased trading and made all 24 employees redundant.

Insolvency practitioners Jeremy Woodside and Tracey Pye of Quantuma Advisory have been appointed as joint liquidators to deal with these financial struggles. Their focus has been on maximising returns for creditors and supporting affected staff through redundancy claims.

Company filings show Baltic Bakehouse held assets valued at £163,000 but liabilities exceeding £46,000 at the time of liquidation. A Freedom of Information (FOI) request later revealed serious food hygiene failings at the Wavertree site, including evidence of rodent activity.

The collapse of Baltic Bakehouse underscores the growing insolvency pressures on UK independent food businesses, where rising costs, compliance challenges, and operational setbacks continue to drive companies into administration and liquidation.
